Homemade Honey BBQ Sauce Recipe – Mashed

Let’s be honest: BBQ sauce is one of our favorite condiments. Whether it’s served on pulled pork sandwiches, as a dipping sauce with chicken tenders, drizzled on pizza, or even whisked into a salad dressing; we are always a fan. While there are many variations of BBQ sauces out there, typically altering according to region, one of our ultimate favorites is a BBQ sauce with a hint of extra sweetness from honey.

Recipe developer Catherine Brookes brings us this recipe for homemade honey BBQ sauce. This recipe comes together in less than 30 minutes and can be paired with many types of foods. Brookes adds, “It also pairs really well with a range of meats such as pulled pork, chicken, or even vegan alternatives. It’s great spread over a rack of ribs before roasting and perfect for making BBQ chicken tacos, too.”

To make this homemade honey BBQ sauce, you can start by gathering your ingredients. For this recipe, you will need olive oil, white onion, garlic, honey, ketchup, light brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, smoked paprika, chili powder, lemon juice, apple cider vinegar, salt, and black pepper.

Caramelize the onion and fry the garlic

Catherine Brookes/Mashed

Place a skillet over the stove top and bring the heat to medium-low. Then, add the olive oil and once it is heated add the onion. Cook the onion until it is softened and starting to caramelize. This should take about 15 minutes. Then, add the minced garlic before cooking for an additional minute. At this point, the garlic will start to become fragrant.
