Married couple Allison and Stephen Ellsworth were searching for a way to alleviate Allison’s chronic health problems. She found relief in the form of apple cider vinegar but wanted to create a drink that would taste better than pure vinegar. Poppi drinks are made from apple cider vinegar, organic fruit juice, and herbs. At the time of Mother Beverage’s “Shark Tank” appearance, the company sold a few different flavors. Customers could choose from lime ginger, raspberry rose, pineapple turmeric, and blueberry sage.

The couple decided to bottle and brand the drinks as Mother Beverages. After the couple found success selling the drinks at a Dallas farmers market, Dallas-Fort Worth area Whole Foods locations began selling the drinks. The company had also received an order to be sold in Albertsons stores nationwide at the time of the Ellsworths’ “Shark Tank” appearance.

However, the Ellsworths wanted to expand the business further, so they headed to “Shark Tank” seeking an investment that would elevate the brand and help them increase sales.

In Season 10, Episode 8 of “Shark Tank,” Stephen and Allison Ellsworth approached the Sharks seeking a $400,000 investment in exchange for 10% of Mother Beverage. They passed out samples of the drinks to the Sharks, and Lori Greiner compared the flavor to a normal soda.

Both Kevin O’Leary and guest Shark Bethenny Frankel were concerned about the Ellsworths’ want to manufacture the drinks themselves. Instead, they wanted them to consider using a co-packer. Frankel backed out of making an offer based on the manufacturing aspect. O’Leary agreed that it was too early to invest in the company, so he went out as well. Mark Cuban was concerned about the marketing and money that would be required to promote the company, so he was out. Greiner noted that she liked the company but wasn’t sure it was the right time to invest. Though she was out, she told the Ellsworths that she would buy the drinks as a customer.

Fortunately, there was one Shark still in. Rohan Oza had experience in the beverage industry, and he made them an offer: the $400,000 they wanted for a quarter of the company. The Ellsworths agreed to the deal and walked away with a partnership with Oza.

“Shark Tank” followed up with Mother Beverage in Season 11, Episode 18. The company sold out of its products the same night of the original episode’s airing. Unfortunately, Stephen and Allison Ellsworth found out that “Mother” could not be trademarked, so the name was changed to Poppi — a play on the fact that the drink is an alternative to soda pop. Rohan Oza revealed that he even put more money into the company after seeing the successful rebrand.

Poppi was set to sell in-stores beginning March 2020, reports Forbes. Unfortunately, the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic caused some complications. The company decided to move forward with the launch anyway, though some stores delayed the release. The company also shifted the focus to selling on Amazon and other online grocery sites.

Despite the initial difficulties, the company prevailed, and Poppi can now be found in grocery stores nationwide, including Target, Kroger, Walmart, and Whole Foods Market. Poppi has also expanded its flavor offerings and now sells 10 different drink flavors.
