How Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed Connects to the Movies

The Ghostbusters franchise has been a phenomenal hit for decades. What started as a light action comedy has since grown into a beloved franchise that has been introduced to generations of fans and many who will always answer the call. Recently, the film Ghostbusters: Afterlife resurrected mainstream interest and has since started a new age for Ghostbusters, one that sees its characters in different but equally entertaining scenarios. But even though there are still more stories in the works, film isn't the only outlet to tell the beloved story.

CBR VIDEO OF THE DAY

For example, while there are three films set in the same universe over the span of over 30 years, there are other mediums through which the story has continued. One of the best examples is Ghostbusters: The Video Game, which served as a pseudo-third entry to the films. But now, Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed, a solo/multiplayer title that lets players exist in the same universe as the team and play as or capture ghosts, has entered the fray and offers some fun but subtle connections to the franchise.

Winston Is Funding the New Ghostbusters

Winston Zeddemore was the final Ghostbuster to join the team, which consisted of Ray, Peter and Egon. But unlike the other three, he wasn't a scientist — he was a man in need of a steady paycheck. But what he lacked in the technical know-how, he made up for in his ability to make cost-effective decisions. When the team disbanded, Winston went into a life of finance and found himself making a small fortune. While he lived a life much nicer than what a steady paycheck could provide, he never forgot his roots. In fact, once the Ghostbusters reunited in Ghostbusters: Afterlife, he used his fortune to kickstart the organization once again.

Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed is the follow-up to Winston's monumental decision. As a result, he's one of the game's main characters and is a mentor of sorts, helping the rookies learn the ropes and figure out how to capture ghosts. While he's a prominent fixture in the story, he's not a playable character. However, this works well as it allows Ernie Hudson to deliver a layered performance that's nostalgic yet also something never seen before.

Ray Confirms Phoebe Is Still in Their Lives

Ghostbusters: Afterlife introduced a group of new characters, with the most prominent being Phoebe Spengler, the granddaughter of Egon Spengler. Thanks to her efforts, she, alongside her friends, past Ghostbusters, and the spirit of Egon, pushed back Gozer and saved the world of the living. But part of what made Phoebe such a magnetic character was how easily she fell into the life of a Ghostbuster. Doing so also confirmed that this was a life she wouldn't easily abandon, and Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed did its best to help confirm that.

While happy in his life selling occult books, Ray Stantz is still a crucial fixture in Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed. If it weren't for his interest in the supernatural in the first place, there likely wouldn't have been a Ghostbusters. As a result, he's always there to talk to the players and offer stories or nuggets of information. One example of this is when he mentions that he's still in contact with Phoebe and has since done his best to make sure she and her family are financially stable.

But even more refreshing to hear is that she still visits the firehouse, showing that her interest in Ghostbusting has only continued to grow. While these moments are only loosely tied to the previous films, Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed is a fantastic way to continue the narrative and connect to the movies and the franchise as a whole.
