One Piece Film Red Was Originally Conceived as a Prison Break Story

New behind-the-scenes information reveals that One Piece Film: Red originally had a very different plot.

According to a One Piece fan account on Twitter, screenplay writer Tsutomu Kuroiwa initially conceptualized the movie as a prison break narrative "with the object of rescuing Mr. 2 Bon Kurei from the flying prison 'New Impel Down.'" Bon Kurei played a pivotal role in the "Impel Down Arc" in the manga/anime, acting as one of Luffy's primary allies in the young pirate captain's attempt to free his brother, Ace; however, Bon Kurei ultimately remained behind after he sacrificed himself so Luffy and the other escapees could get away.

A follow-up Twitter post from the fan account provided more details about Film Red's original plot, focusing specifically on the role Uta would have played. Reportedly, she would have been "visiting New Impel Down to comfort the prisoners, but would use her devil fruit to break them out of the prison, leading an insurrection in an attempt to take over the world."

Film Red Went in a Different Direction

The actual plot of Film Red sees Luffy and the rest of the Straw Hat Pirates travel to the Island of Music, where they encounter Uta, who is revealed not only to be a childhood friend of Luffy's but also the estranged daughter of none other than Red-Haired Shanks. A gifted singer, Uta wishes to combat all pain and suffering with the power of music. While this sounds like a worthwhile goal, her real plan shares striking similarities to the plots of two of anime/manga's most iconic villains.

The 15th entry in the One Piece movie franchise, Film Red debuted in Japan in August and quickly became a box office juggernaut. It has already earned over 17 billion yen (about $122 million) and stands as the country's highest-earning film in 2022 so far. Moreover, Film Red has climbed the ranks to become one of Japan's most profitable films of all time, alongside classics like Spirited Away and Weathering With You.

It is important to note that the record-breaking box office does not even factor in sales from most Western markets; Film Red will premiere in Australia and New Zealand on Nov. 3 and in the United States and Canada on Nov. 4. Tickets are already on sale.

For anime watchers who want to catch up on the wacky and exciting adventures of the Straw Hat before Film Red makes its North American debut, Toei Animation's adaptation of One Piece is available to stream on Crunchyroll.
