Spy x Family Recap & Spoilers: S1 E17 ‘Carry Out the Griffin Plan’

The following contains spoilers for Spy x Family Season 1, Episode 17, "Carry Out the Griffin Plan/Fullmetal Lady/Omelet Rice," now streaming on Crunchyroll.

"Carry Out the Griffin Plan" begins with Anya and Becky walking to class together, with the latter telling Anya about the romantic storyline from the latest episode of her favorite show Berlint in Love. Anya is puzzled over Becky's enthusiasm about the romantic storyline, admitting that she prefers anime to dramas. This leads Becky to tease Anya about her immaturity and that she's not ready for love yet. Along the way, Anya and Becky run into Damian Desmond and his two friends, Emile and Ewen.

The three boys briefly poke fun at the girls' interests before bringing up the need to study for the upcoming midterms. Anya catches sight of Damian at this moment, and recalls how badly she botched their last interaction when she failed to answer basic questions about her new dog, Bond. Since Anya still wants to fulfill her mission for Operation Strix, she remembered to bring a family photo of herself, her "parents" and Bond to show Damian, thinking this will finally get his approval. She pretends to drop the photo, hoping Damian will notice it and pick it up for her. Unfortunately for Anya, he walks past her without a second thought.

While a devastated Anya tries to process her shock over Damian ignoring her, Becky picks up the family photo she dropped, and immediately notices how "hot" Anya's father is. Becky develops a crush on Loid and begins asking Anya questions about him. She also decides to keep the photo, much to Anya's annoyance as she needs it to show Damian her dog. When they make it to their arts and crafts class, Becky and Anya immediately notice their usual teacher is out sick, and the school headmaster serves as his temporary substitute.

For their arts and crafts assignment, the students are divided into groups and are asked to create 3D animals using the limited resources provided. Anya is placed in Damian's group, much to her own delight as this means she can finally show Damian the picture of her dog. She once again asks Becky to return her family photo to her, though the latter refuses. While Anya chases Becky around the classroom to get the photo back, Damian fumes over the thought of having to work with Anya, whom he sees as incompetent.

Knowing that the arts and crafts projects are going to be evaluated by some important individuals at the school, Damian decides to take the project seriously by creating something he thinks his father will be proud of. To this end, he decides to replicate the family's griffin. In Anya's case, she decides to use the paper provided to create a 3D model of Bond to show to Damian, though he is far from impressed with her creation. Anya then opts to help Damian with his project, which he reluctantly agrees to. Becky on the other hand decides to make a model of Loid, which impresses the headmaster despite going against his instructions.

While working with Anya, Damian quickly learns she is incapable of following instructions, and does the polar opposite of what he asks. This leads to him scolding Anya for wasting paper, which in turn gets him scolded by the headmaster, who tells him to work within his means. Damian reluctantly acquiesces the headmaster's request and ends up with a griffin model he is far from proud of. To compensate for her failure, Anya turns her model of Bond into a smaller female griffin to give to him. Damian once again reluctantly accepts her "gift," which ironically helps him win the top prize for how regal it looked to one of the judges.

Thinking that she completed her personal mission, Anya congratulates Damian on the griffin model by telling him he can show it to his father. Damian refuses to acknowledge the project, however, thinking of it as garbage. Later that night, Damian calls his family butler, Jeeves, to let him know he won't be home during the school break since his father won't be home. He then asks Jeeves if he told his father about his orientation. He says that he did, and that his father was worried about his health. A sad Damian, however, knows he's lying since his father never once cared for him as his second son. After ending the call, he asks Emile and Ewen to study with him.

In "Fullmetal Lady," Sylvia Sherwood's backstory is revealed. By day, she is an attaché at the Westalis embassy in Ostania and performs her normal duties in that role. By night, she is the commander of WISE's intelligence agents, which has her under strict surveillance by the Secret Police. As a result of her flawless performance, she is nicknamed the "Fullmetal Lady" by her own agents. On her way to a public pool, Sylvia is followed by Secret Police officers in disguise, which doesn't go unnoticed by her.

Having learned Sylvia's routine, the two Secret Police officers take a one-hour break for lunch, while Sylvia changes into a new disguise to meet with Loid, aka Twilight. With their original meeting place compromised, Sylvia and Twilight signal their new meeting place to one another. During their meeting, Sylvia updates Twilight on the details of Donovan Desmond's financial reports. Specifically, she reveals that he has a paper company with low public numbers.

Sylvia then asks Twilight for an update on Operation Strix, but all he can tell her about is Anya's progress a child learning new skills, which Sylvia fails to understand the relevance of. The episode then ends with the short "Omelette Rice" vignette, which showcases Yor cooking meals for her brother Yuri as a child, which plays out exactly the same way it did in the Episode 16 story "Yor's Kitchen."

Based on the popular manga series by Tatsuya Endo, new episodes of Spy x Family stream every Saturday on Crunchyroll.
