Chainsaw Man: What My Hero Academia Quirk Would Denji Have?

The following contains spoilers for Episode 3 of Chainsaw Man,"Meowy’s Whereabouts," now streaming on Crunchyroll.

Denji is the peculiar protagonist of the highly anticipated Fall 2022 anime Chainsaw Man. With no motivation past experiencing all the pleasures life has to offer, he is often underestimated and his threat minimized. However, when Denji unleashes his alter ego — the Chainsaw Man — his capacity for destructive raw power is undeniable.

Denji’s gruesome appearance would be quite out of place in My Hero Academia’s relatively censored world, but there’s definitely one specific Quirk in the superhero series that would fit him perfectly.

CBR VIDEO OF THE DAY

Denji’s Abilities in Chainsaw Man

Denji is a devil hunter who has practiced in the trade ever since he was little. His years of fighting and killing these creatures have given him an almost sixth sense in combat; he instinctively reacts to threats that try to take him unawares and understands how to exploit his opponents’ weak points, be they human or demon. Denji is deceptively strong and speedy for his size, as his feats of strength always seem to impress his in-universe audience.

When Denji pulls on the cord that emerges from his chest, he transforms into a human-devil hybrid known as the Chainsaw Man. In this state, his head is morphed into a mechanical chainsaw-like attachment — which works exactly like a real chainsaw — but capable of cutting through infinitely tougher materials. He also sprouts chainsaws from his hands that can aid him in slicing through obstacles but, unlike the one on his head, these are retractable and can be manifested on other parts of his body.

Denji’s Chainsaw parts stem from a contract he signed with his devil pet, Pochita. As the two lay dying, Pochita chose to sacrifice their life and transplanted their heart into Denji’s own, giving him the abilities of the Chainsaw devil. In exchange, Denji was supposed to live out his dream for both of them. Pochita asked Denji to simply live out the normal life he had been unable to grasp in their shared lifetime.

Denji Would Have Kamakiri's Razor Sharp Quirk in My Hero Academia

The My Hero Academia Quirk that would best suit Denji’s chainsaws is Togaru Kamakiri from Class 1-B’s Razor Sharp. Known more popularly by his hero name, Jack Knife, Kamakiri’s Quirk allows him to manifest extendable blades from any part of his body. He can project and withdraw his blades at a moment's notice, and his blades never seem to dull no matter how much he uses his Quirk. Kamakiri can also use the blades he manifests in very delicate situations, making incredibly fine cuts to unwieldy obstacles and using his blades freely without harming allies beside him.

Denji’s hybrid form in Chainsaw Man and Kamakiri’s Razor Sharp Quirk in MHA have some obvious similarities, but there are also distinct differences — the most prominent being the method with which their powers are activated. The chainsaws that manifest when Denji pulls his chest cord cut right through his skin to emerge, so his transformations are a painful, bloody ordeal every time. Kamikari’s Quirk comes as easily to him as breathing, and unlike Denji, its activation doesn’t depend on how much blood is still in his body.
