One Piece Chapter 1061: Luffy’s Funny Description of Gear Five

The following contains spoilers for One Piece Chapter 1061, "Future Island Egghead," by Eiichiro Oda, Stephen Paul, and Vanessa Satone, available in English from Viz Media.

Monkey D. Luffy's Gear Five is his ultimate form. It's when he accesses the full potential of his Devil Fruit and becomes the Sun God Nika. As such, one might expect him to describe it as his strongest state. However, "strong" isn't the first word that comes to mind for him.

The Straw Hat captain instead describes Gear Five as his freest form. "Free" is certainly a common word in his vocabulary, but it's still a peculiar choice of words. The fact that he calls Gear Five this at this point in the narrative could be an implication of what his newfound Devil Fruit powers are doing to him.

Why Luffy Describes Gear Five as "Free"

The conversation that prompted Luffy's description came up in Chapter 1061, "Future Island Egghead." Jewelry Bonney asked him what the story was behind his appearance; he was recently shown on wanted posters and in newspapers with white hair. Luffy explained that it's what he looks like when he's free.

Technically, this explanation of Gear Five isn't wrong. After all, the Sun God was once revered as a freer of slaves. The sound of his heartbeat has even been likened to the drums of liberation. Looking at it like this, describing Gear Five as a form of freedom is reasonable and even ideal.

What's strange, however, is that Luffy doesn't have this frame of reference. He doesn't know anything about Nika or Joy Boy or even the real name of his Devil Fruit. As far as he knows, Gear Five is just the ultimate form of his Gum-Gum Fruit.

Luffy's describing Gear Five as a form of freedom may be an influence of Nika. Unlike other Devil Fruits, Zoan Fruits have personalities of their own, which can manifest in the user. It's presumably why Luffy was caught in fits of uncontrollable laughter in Gear Five despite his critical condition; such is the nature of the Human-Human Fruit Model: Nika. If he's not careful, the Devil Fruit could someday take over his mind completely.

Should Fans Worry About Luffy?

A more positive way to interpret Luffy's description is as something he would say. He has always placed a lot of value on his freedom to the point where he associates the title of Pirate King with being the freest man alive. In this sense, it would be natural for him to describe his ultimate form as the time when he's at his freest.

It's also important to keep in mind that he does consider strength as a part of Gear Five. When he gave his description, he also flexed his muscles to imitate the form; his arms and legs even grew simplistic in their design like they would when transformed. While "strong" wasn't the first word out of Luffy's mouth, it was somewhere on his tongue.

For now, it's best to view Luffy's unexpected choice of words as a harmless coincidence. It's still in character for him and just happens to fit his new powers perfectly. If he starts showing more radical signs of Nika's influence on him, then fans can start getting worried.
