Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania Has Kang Copying Thanos’ Smartest Strategy

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania may still be a personal story for Scott Lang and his family, but it's also possibly the most important film to set up Phase Five. The reason for this is that the film will also introduce a dangerous and possibly most prominent variant of Kang the Conqueror. While not much is known of Kang in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, his history, explained by He Who Remains and his comic counterpart, shows just how deadly he is.

As a master of time, Kang has shown skill in learning from the past and future to better command his present. In doing so, he's also made himself the most strategically skilled enemy in the Marvel Universe. But learning that would mean he's aimed to improve on already successful strategies to better work for him. As Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania has shown, he may have also borrowed a battle strategy used by Thanos.

Which Thanos Strategy Could Benefit Kang?

In Avengers: Endgame, Thanos used Pym Particles that were stolen by a variant of Nebula to transport his army through time to get the drop on the future and The Avengers. While Thanos ultimately failed, it was an example of a strategy he'd used to conquer before, in which he unleashed hordes of his armies at the enemy with the purpose of overwhelming and defeating his foes. Moreover, because of its simplistic yet effective approach, it may be one that would work well with Kang's plans that are already in motion.

In the trailer for Quantumania, a brief glimpse could be seen of a massive army powered by the energy of the Quantum Realm. There were flying ships and soldiers standing in wait for a command to attack, and their armor looked similar to the blue face shield that Kang wore as well. Therefore, perhaps Kang's request for Scott will be to provide him with enough Pym Particles to travel through the Quantum Realm, like Thanos, to get the drop on Earth and conquer it. In doing so, he would then send Scott and his family home, leaving him with an impossible choice. But more intriguing would be how Kang likely put enough thought into this plan knowing how effective it could be.

Could Kang Borrow More Tactics From Other Villains?

Kang the Conqueror is a special case in terms of villainy because his true power comes from his intellect. That said, using a strategy implemented by Thanos would fit well with Kang's characterization, as he would not only use his moves but also improve them. But more importantly, if Thanos' tactics were on the table, other villains from across the Multiverse could also appear in Quantumania or other upcoming projects. For example, as he conquers one world, Kang or a variant may use the tactics of What If…?'s Infinity Ultron to rip through the Multiverse and face off against his variants.

In the end, Kang the Conqueror may be the most ironic and unpredictable character in the MCU. But the irony comes from the fact that he's unpredictable to anyone but himself, as he's seen every possible outcome time could provide. Nevertheless, he's a scholar and fighter who's capable of looking into the deeper meaning of things, which could therefore mean that even villains who weren't successful in the past could offer insight that Kang could use to his advantage.

To see Kang wreak havoc on the MCU, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania dives into theaters on Feb. 17, 2023.
