10/10 The Wizard Of Oz Is A Classic

Although The Wizard of Oz isn’t usually classified as a Halloween movie, Margaret Hamilton’s portrayal of the Wicked Witch of the West has been scaring kids since 1939. With her bright green skin, evil cackle, and simple black outfit, the Wicked Witch became one of the most iconic villains of all time.

The Wicked Witch is also the most definitive version of a movie witch, having influenced the appearance of witches for decades. Even now, despite having plenty of other iconic witches to choose from, young girls are still picking out warty green masks to go with their broomsticks and pointy black hats.

9/10 The Sanderson Sisters Are Wicked In Hocus Pocus

Although Hocus Pocus 2 is fun, nothing beats the original movie. After being hanged for witchcraft and murder, the Sanderson sisters are accidentally resurrected by a group of kids. The kids must send the witches back before the Sandersons drain young Salem residents of life to preserve their immortality.

Starring Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy, and Sarah Jessica Parker as the three witches, Hocus Pocus is a classic Halloween romp. It features the witches doing a musical number, awesome displays of magic, and a bumbling zombie. Hocus Pocus has enough darkness to scare the kids and some humor to keep the movie from being too scary.

8/10 Scooby-Doo And The Witch’s Ghost Is Family-Friendly

In the second film of the new Scooby-Doo era, Scooby-Doo and the Witch’s Ghost sees the Mystery Inc. gang up against the vengeful ghost of a powerful witch named Sarah. At first, it looks like another hoax, but there’s more to the scheme than meets the eye.

Sarah is a fairly good Scooby-Doo villain. However, the real stars are the Hex Girls, a Gothic rock band led by Thorn McKnight. The Witch's Ghost is a fun, spooky, and family-friendly movie to enjoy on Halloween. Despite being a fan favorite, Sarah's magical abilities have never been explored in other versions, which is a huge shame.

7/10 Suspiria Is One Of The Most Influential Horror Movies

There are plenty of supernatural horror movies available, but Suspiria is among the best. Masquerading as ballet instructors, Mater Suspiriorum and her coven use their students as human sacrifices until one of the girls manages to kill the Mater and end her reign of terror.

Directed by Dario Argento, this Italian horror classic is one of the genre's most stylized horror movies. From the bright colors to the surrealistic architecture, Suspiria is a nightmarish landscape. Despite not being well-received by critics upon its release, Suspiria is widely-considered one of the most influential horror movies and is the most respected out of Argento’s Three Mothers trilogy.

6/10 Blair Witch Continues The Found Footage Style

While The Blair Witch Project received mixed reviews, the 2016 sequel, Blair Witch, deserves praise. While the sequel isn't as creative or groundbreaking as its predecessor, the titular Blair Witch continues to terrify her prey and the audience in Blair Witch.

Although the Blair Witch was an unseen force in the first movie, she teases audiences with glimpses in Blair Witch. A blurry, pale figure can barely be seen on the screen, but audiences are given enough to incite their imaginations. The sequel follows a similar setup as the original, as a group of researchers heads out on a terrifying trip in the woods to find out if the Blair Witch is real.

5/10 The Witch Is Anya Taylor-Joy's Movie Debut

Although it's not as gory as Suspiria or as mysterious as The Blair Witch Project, The Witch is one of the most chilling witch movies to date. Chronicling the destruction of a Puritan family in the 1630s, the story takes the modern witch back to her roots in a time when witches were thought to be servants of the devil.

The titular character is a stereotype of that time. She seduces men, murders children, and dances naked in the woods. Society is bleak with few comforts and most The Witch characters aren’t necessarily good, just tamed. The Witch is one of the best witch movies thanks to its story and its performances, which was Anya Taylor-Joy's debut movie role.

4/10 1990's The Witches Is A Cult Classic

Released in 1990, The Witches is a dark comedy horror movie that's based on Roald Dahl's book of the same name. The 1990 movie, like the 2020 remake with Anne Hathaway, follows a young boy on vacation with his grandma. He discovers that a group of witches is at the hotel and plan to turn all children into rodents.

The Witches is a cult classic horror movie that received praise from critics and audiences for its fun premise, interesting character development, and Anjelica Huston's performance, which is cemented by its 93% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. 2020's The Witches, on the other hand, received mixed reviews.

3/10 The Witches Of Eastwick Gives Witches A Human Side

The funny and spooky The Witches of Eastwick features three lonely women who conjure up the man of their dreams. However, their dream quickly turns into a nightmare as their antics get out of hand.

The Witches of Eastwick is not the first witch story to show them as being relatable human beings. The first was TV shows from the 1960s like Bewitched and Sabrina the Teenage Witch, which saw witches using their magic to deal with mundane problems, often with humorous results. However, The Witches of Eastwick was among the first stories since the Satanic panic in the 1980s to continue this trend.

2/10 Practical Magic: The Happiest Ending A Witch Can Get

Adapted from the novel by Alice Hoffman, Practical Magic is a comedy, thriller, and romance movie all rolled into one witchy movie. Starring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman as the Owens sisters, and Dianne Wiest and Stockard Channing as their sassy aunts, Practical Magic follows their quest to break an ancient curse on their family and find the love of their lives.

Practical Magic didn’t do well at the box office and was poorly received by critics. However, it remains a popular watch for the Halloween season. It’s a hugely optimistic movie that celebrates love, acceptance, and empowerment, all while indulging in witchy fun.

1/10 The Craft Is A Witchy, Coming-Of-Age Tale

The Craft is arguably one of the most timeless witch movies ever made. Two and a half decades after its release, it still resonates with teenage girls and has become a cult classic.

The Craft is notable for its grounded take on magic and feminist themes. Its other themes are coming-of-age, female empowerment, and friendship. The outfits are also iconic; the Gothic style used for Nancy Downs, the antagonist, set a new bar for the style of the modern witch and turned her into one of the most memorable witches in film history.
