Tales of the Jedi Makes the Clone Wars Finale Even More Heartbreaking

The following article contains spoilers for Tales of the Jedi Season 1, Episode 5 "Practice Makes Perfect," now streaming on Disney+.

Two of the through-lines of Star Wars: The Clone Wars are the bonds Ahsoka Tano establishes with her master Anakin Skywalker and the Clone Troopers of the 501st Legion, including Captain Rex. The series' final arc is particularly effective because of these friendships. Anakin left half of the 501st legion under Ahsoka's command on Mandalore. In her honor, the Clone Troopers under her command painted their helmets with orange markings similar to Ahsoka's own. This heartwarming moment later became devastating when Emperor Palpatine triggered Order 66, because it showed that the Clone Troopers would never have turned on Ahsoka of their own free will.

Tales of the Jedi's fifth episode "Practice Makes Perfect" expands further upon Ahsoka's bonds and the ultimate tragedy of Order 66. Anakin sets up a training exercise in which Ahsoka must fight many members of the 501st Legion. While this lesson seems particularly harsh, the end of the episode flashes forward to The Clone Wars' final episode, "Victory and Death," specifically to when Ahsoka and Rex tried to escape from their former friends. The juxtaposition of the training scenes in Tales of the Jedi with The Clone Wars' finale gives more context to Order 66 and makes Ahsoka and Rex's losses even more heartbreaking.

Anakin Skywalker's Methods Reflect His Dissatisfaction with the Jedi

Anakin's dissatisfaction with the Jedi Order and their methods is shown in both overt and covert ways throughout The Clone Wars and in the prequel trilogy. Tales of the Jedi builds upon Anakin's growing rift with the Jedi Order through the lens of Ahsoka's training. The episode begins with Ahsoka completing a traditional Jedi training exercise in which she excels. However, Anakin has no praise for Ahsoka; he instead focuses on the flaws he sees in the exercise itself. Thus, his dissatisfaction with the Order blinds him to what Ahsoka has already accomplished.

Anakin's criticisms of the Jedi test are rooted in their specificity. Ahsoka's original exercise focuses on preparing young Jedi to battle the Separatist droid army. Anakin instead creates a test using Clone Troopers from the 501st Legion with their blasters set to stun. He states, "Droids are predictable. I want you to be prepared for anything." Anakin's concern for Ahsoka's safety is firmly established throughout The Clone Wars. He even reaffirms this goal after many rounds, stating that Ahsoka will be able to handle anything if she can fight off Rex and the rest of the Clone Troopers. While Anakin believes he is acting in Ahsoka's best interests by setting up this new test, the origin of this trainign exercise show that he also is partially taking out his frustration with the Jedi Order on her, even if he does not consciously realize it.

Anakin's Training Exercises Were Brutal for Ahsoka and the Clone Troopers

However, this particular exercise is cruel to everyone involved. While Anakin brushes off the effects of the stun with a simple "You'll get used to it," Ahsoka is knocked unconscious for an hour the first time. She is still stumbling when Anakin begins the next round of the training exercise. After each round, Ahsoka becomes even woozier and falls faster. Anakin could have given Ahsoka more time to recover between rounds and the exercise would have been even more effective and less brutal.

Anakin also forces the Troopers to fire upon their friend and commander. When Ahsoka wakes up from being stunned for the first time, she hears Anakin having to reassure Rex that she will be fine. Rex continues to voice his concern throughout the exercise. Clone Trooper Jesse is the first one to stun Ahsoka, and he immediately apologizes to Ahsoka when she regains consciousness. This apology and Rex's concern show that the Clone Troopers are conflicted about the training exercise even though they do follow orders. While Anakin's training does help Ahsoka survive later on, he forces Ahsoka and the Clone Troopers to fight each other when he could have devised other tests to achieve the same goal.

Anakin's Training Exercises Foreshadowed Ahsoka's Escape

The foreshadowing in "Practice Makes Perfect" makes "Victory and Death" even more devastating. The imagery of the Clone Troopers from the 501st Legion surrounding Ahsoka with their blasters drawn in "Practice Makes Perfect" heavily reflects their unwitting betrayal of Ahsoka and the Jedi under the influence of Order 66. Jesse, the first to stun Ahsoka in the training exercise, becomes the main leader of the charge against her. When "Practice Makes Perfect" jumps forward to Ahsoka and Rex's escape from Order 66, Rex references the training, stating "Let's hope all that training pays off" as they prepare to face the rest of the Legion once more.

Anakin's training did uniquely prepare Ahsoka for Order 66 and her survival against the Inquisitors. However, the training exercises show that the Clone Troopers are conflicted over fighting Ahsoka even as part of a training exercise and emphasizes that they would not have turned on Ahsoka by their own choice. Tales of the Jedi provides more context for Ahsoka's survival and in the process makes the 501st Legion's fall to Order 66 even more devastating for Ahsoka and the viewers.
