Marvel Unsheaths the First Look at Blade’s Daughter Solo Series

Blade's daughter picks up the vampire-killing ways of her father in a new series, Bloodline: Daughter of Blade, set for release next February.

The series, first announced at New York Comic Con, is penned by Danny Lore (Champions, Death of Doctor Strange: Blade) and illustrated by Karen S. Darboe (Crypt of Shadows, Magic: The Hidden Planeswalker). Bloodline: Daughter of Blade spans five issues, with each entry in the series revealing the origin of Brielle Brooks, a character who first appeared in this year's Free Comic Book Day: Avengers/X-Men special. "One of my earliest Marvel memories is watching Blade with my father, and being in awe of how intensely cool the Daywalker is," Lore said. "Over the years I’ve only grown to love Blade even more. Brielle ‘Bloodline’ Brooks is literally the child of a dual legacy in that way: both Blade’s long history, and my personal comic legacy. When you guys join us on this journey, I hope you find a part of yourself in Brielle’s story."

Bloodline: Daughter of Blade delves not only into Brielle's connection with her father, but also reveals how she develops her vampiric powers and forges a new Daywalker legacy entirely her own. Issue #1 features a variant cover by Ryan Stegman that shows Brielle unsheathing a sword overladen with a bloody fanged smile — proving that the series will have more than enough gore to live up to the Blade name.

Brielle's Marvel Beginnings

Brielle's debut in Free Comic Book Day: Avengers/X-Men was in the story "Bloodline," also by Lore and Darboe, with colors by Ian Herring. The short tale saw Brielle going toe-to-toe with Eturnal, a vampire who emerges at a gaming tournament in Atlanta. After making short work of her opponent with a custom gaming controller encrusted with silver, Brielle retreats home.

The final pages reveal that Safron Caulder Deville, Blade's on-and-off girlfriend who first debuted in 1973's Tomb of Dracula #12, is Brielle's mother. Safron is presented as protective of her daughter but still fully aware of Brielle's undead-fighting escapades. The story ends with her opening a secret cache of weapons and looking at an old photograph of herself and her beau, musing, "Oh, Blade…I think your baby girl needs you."

Bloodline: Daughter of Blade #1 goes on sale Feb. 1 from Marvel Comics.
