A Unique Ghostbusters Callback Honors Egon Spengler in Spirits Unleashed

The Ghostbusters franchise has grown and expanded since the first film was released in the 80s. At first, it was simply an action comedy film that focused heavily on how fun and surprisingly risky it could be to track down and capture spirits in unlikely places. Now, decades later, the franchise has kickstarted a phenomenon that has not only sparked interest in the supernatural but also shown that anyone could be a Ghostbuster. Thanks to Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed, fans can finally put their skills to good use and join forces with their favorite heroes.

CBR VIDEO OF THE DAY

Set after the post-credits scene of Ghostbusters: Afterlife, Winston Zeddemore uses his fortune to restart the Ghostbusters, restoring the firehouse and hiring new blood to hunt down any stray spectral threats. Spirits Unleashed follows those new recruits as players customize their Ghostbusters or take on the roles of ghosts and join with others in a 4v1 experience. The game also contains fungi, spores, and mold that can be collected. While these collectibles may seem strange, they're actually tied to the late Harold Ramis' character, Egon Spengler.

The Significance of Finding Fungi in Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed

Before he was a Ghostbuster, Egon was a brilliant scientist whose curiosity often caused him to be alienated from many. For example, whereas kids like to play with a slinky, a young Egon was more interested in straightening his. Nevertheless, he wasn't devoid of humor or personality and was often only quiet because he paid the most attention to the things others never noticed. Without him, most of the technology the Ghostbusters used wouldn't have existed.

Sadly, Egon died protecting the world from Gozer in Ghostbusters: Afterlife, but his spirit guided his granddaughter, Phoebe, to finish his mission. As she learned more about him, she also saw that he, in his isolated farm home, still collected various molds and fungi, his favorite hobby as stated in the first film: "I collect spores, mold, and fungus." Spengler was a great and loyal friend, even if he fell out with the rest of the gang towards the end. The fungi collecting in Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed represents how the developers wanted to honor Ramis, but also how Winston wouldn't let Egon's legacy die either.

What Players Get for Finding the Fungi, Spores, and Mold

Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed does an excellent job of introducing players to the game's basics on how to catch ghosts. However, players are left to their own devices in terms of exploration. The same could be said for the fungus collection found on the firehouse's second floor. These fungi, spores, and mold, once collected, give players incremental XP boosts. When players gain 25% completion each time, they gain a massive XP boost of up to 50,000 points.

Once players have reached 100% in collecting the fungi, they gain a special cap that they can equip onto their character. In the end, the goal of the fungi collectibles isn't about the collectibles themselves, but instead more so a way to keep the legacy and memory of Harold Ramis and Egon Spengler alive. This is especially important for players that may be new to the franchise and have no idea of the character's importance. Now, it's become an outlet to better understand one of the founding members of the original Ghostbusters team.
