Ubisoft has officially announced Project Invictus, a multiplayer Assassin's Creed game.

As reported by Insider Gaming, the Assassin's Creed franchise is once again growing with an upcoming multiplayer game temporarily titled Project Invictus. Ubisoft's most recent earnings report details the development of the game. "Additionally, a team, including For Honor veterans, is currently working on bringing back multiplayer to Assassin's Creed with a standalone experience through Infinity under the project codename Invictus," the studio wrote.

Ubisoft Provided More Context for Infinity

The upcoming standalone title will join Red and Hexe in Assassin's Creed's Infinity Hub. While the announcement of Infinity initially confused fans about whether it was an upcoming game or not, Ubisoft provided more information on the mysterious matter. "Assassin's Creed Infinity will be a gateway for all Assassin's Creed experiences where the metastory will live asynchronously," the studio wrote.

"This project will allow us to link games with a common and more coherent narrative thread that will reward players for their involvement in the universe, driving engagement, while at the same time providing more discoverability for the content we create." After Invictus' announcement, there are currently six Assassin's Creed games in development, including Mirage, Jade and the VR game Project Nexus.

Assassin's Creed fans haven't seen a multiplayer mode since the 2013 title Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag. The first multiplayer feature arrived with the 2010 game Assassin's Creed Brotherhood. Other titles in the franchise with the multiplayer feature include Assassin’s Creed Revelations and Assassin’s Creed III. The 2014 game Assassin’s Creed Unity additionally offered players an online cooperative multiplayer mode.

Since the franchise's eponymous title released in 2007 for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, the popular video game series has released 12 mainline games. Ubisoft's open-world adventure games explores different periods in history, and sometimes include real-life historical figures. Examples include Leonardo da Vinci and Benjamin Franklin.

In addition to video games, game publisher CMON is taking Assassin's Creed into the tabletop world. "Bringing Assassin's Creed to tabletop RPG is an exciting challenge with near endless potential," said Francesco Nepitello, CMON's Head of IP & RPGs. "The video game's highly original premise — combining modern-day reality with period adventures, offers such an incredible opportunity for us to bring players a variety of gameplay that is unprecedented in most RPGs."

As of writing, the release date for Project Invictus is undetermined.
