New realms and bigger enemies await Kratos and Atreus in God of War Ragnarök.

A recently released behind-the-scenes video from PlayStation's official YouTube channel delves into the upcoming game's new combat mechanics and the variety of enemies that'll be encountered in the pair's journey. In the second half of the video, Kim Nguyen, senior gameplay animator, gives a brief explanation of the process that goes into creating an impactful set piece for gamers. Nguyen says she drew some of her inspiration from the memorable set pieces in the original God of War titles. "There were so many amazing, huge boss fights and set pieces that it was a huge inspiration for me on my time on this project," she said.

Many unique enemies have been shown in previous trailers, but this video delves into the thought process behind adding monsters that stand out in their own way. As Combat Designer Stephen Oyarijivbie states, "After the last game, we heard the community cry out for more mini-bosses, bigger creatures, and enemy variety." So far, centaurs, electrified lizards, pairs of valkyries, light elves and amphibious-looking humanoids are seen challenging the Ghost of Sparta.

The developer behind the God of War sequel, Santa Monica Studio, is bringing a lot of new material to the game. However, director Eric Williams says that fans shouldn't expect an "evolution" in Ragnarök. Rather than transforming it into something entirely new, the creators have focused on improving what they achieved in the first game to deliver a cohesive story. "It would have taken us forever to rebuild the whole game and then take on that story. If you liked [the reboot], we'll give you that [again, but] we're going to do a lot more refining," Williams said.

God of War Ragnarök follows the titular Kratos and his godling son as they seek out a way to circumvent the doomsday prophecy of Ragnarök. Having endured three years of the winter that precedes this cataclysmic event, the pair search for the supposedly dead Tyr in the hopes that he knows something no other god or mortal does. Unfortunately, they have made many powerful enemies such as Thor, Odin and the vengeful Freya, all of whom want a piece of the Ghost of Sparta for themselves.

God of War Raganrök comes out on Nov. 9 exclusively for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.
