Why Nightcrawler Is Marvel Snap’s Best Card (for Now)

Marvel Snap, the innovative virtual card game featuring everyone's favorite Marvel heroes, as well as the inaugural game from Second Dinner Studios, has been released for early access after the completion of the closed beta. Players on Steam have rated the game quite positively and are enjoying some beneficial differences that Marvel Snap has to offer versus other collectible card games.

Each deck players use for a match in Marvel Snap is made up of twelve cards of the player's choosing. Each card has a power level and an energy cost, and some cards have additional special abilities that give players an advantage. According to the Marvel Snap Database, the Nightcrawler card is included in the decks of 37.5% of players. Based on its special ability and combination of energy and power, it's clear why Nightcrawler is currently viewed as the best card in the game.

The Basics of Marvel Snap

In Marvel Snap, players are given three locations and three initial cards from which to choose. Each location has a special type of power, like adding +2 power to each card, the inability to add cards to that location for certain turns, or adding +3 power to the highest-powered card. Each player is given energy for each turn — 1 energy for level 1, 2 energy for level 2, and so forth — that must be divvied out in a strategic way to be able to place higher-cost cards later. The players take their turns simultaneously, which is unique, so there is no waiting for the other player to make their move and no decisions being made based on what the other player just did.

What Makes Nightcrawler So Useful in Marvel Snap

The Nightcrawler card costs 1 energy to play and offers 2 power points. It's not a high-powered card, but its low cost makes it easier to play sooner. Nightcrawler's special ability is to be able to move the card to a different location once per match. Since many special power bonuses for the cards are based on how many of the opponent's cards are in that location and certain location-based power bonuses require a particular number of cards, it's beneficial to be able to move the Nightcrawler card after the first play. This could thwart the opponent from getting a power bonus for how many cards they have in that location or give players an additional power bonus due to moving it to a location with a better special ability.

Some players might say that Nightcrawler being part of so many players' decks is a coincidence because the card is not that difficult to find. As players continue to match with other players for each roughly three-minute card battle, they earn collection levels. Every few collection levels gained, there is a new card reward. The Nightcrawler card is the reward for collection level 8, which equates to a little under an hour of gameplay for players that understand the game well and tend to win frequently. Whether this is the case or not, Nightcrawler's special ability still sets the card apart from others.

Since Marvel Snap is still in its early access phase, things could always change over time as more cards are added, and there are no guarantees that the cards that are currently out will stay the same as they are. Hopefully, the unique aspects of the game do stay the same, because Marvel Snap utilizes the popularity of Marvel characters and leaves out the frustration and impatience gamers often experience in other CCGs. More cards will be updated or added and players will have to reassess in the future, but for the game in its current state, Nightcrawler is a really solid choice to be part of one's deck.
