The MCU Just Introduced a Powerful New Artifact – But What Can it Really Do?
There are many artifacts and items throughout the Marvel universe for heroes and villains alike to use at their disposal. Throughout the years, many of them such as the Infinity Stones and the Darkhold have made appearances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Recently, a new artifact has been introduced in the Disney Plus show, Werewolf By Night.
The Blood Gem, or Bloodstone as it’s known in the comics, is a powerful artifact once coveted by the ruthless monster hunter, Ulysses Bloodstone. After his untimely death in the special, monster hunters from all over the world came to claim it, including his estranged daughter, Elsa Bloodstone. What is special about this gem, and how does it benefit its user?

The Origins of The Bloodstone
The Bloodstone was introduced in Marvel Presents #1 (by John Warner, Mike Vosbburg, Bob Mcleod, Diane Buscema, and Tom Orzechowski). It was sent into space by an entity known as the Exo-Mind with the intent to control various dimensions. It sent out an agent named Ulluxy'l Kwan Tae Syn to find a host for it. However, it crashed as a meteorite on earth, where it was found by Ulysses Bloodstone himself. A fragment of the stone embedded itself into his chest while the explosion from the impact decimated his tribe. This caused Ulysses to become immortal.
With the gem, Ulysses was able to live a very long life combating monsters and aliens, becoming one of the most well renowned hunters in Marvel history. Later, when he passed, the gem in his chest was divided between his two children, Elsa and Cullen Bloodstone. Depending on the wielder of the artifact, the Bloodstone is capable of many feats. It commonly grants its users with extraordinary abilities in strength, speed, durability, reflexes, and stamina. It could also protect one from illusions or mental manipulation as well as give user self-healing abilities depending on who was using it.
Ulysses was able to gain immortality and some psychic abilities. He could use the stone to identify whether a person was possessed by a spirit or monster, telepathically communicate with monsters, and send the essence of the monsters and himself into the gem in his chest to fight in astral form. Because of the gem in Ulysses’s chest, Elsa is said to have already been born with some of the Bloodstone’s power.
Her blood not only allows her to be immune to vampire bites, but even destroy any vampire that tries to feed from her. She is also able to discharge potent energy blasts from the gem, which is set in a choker necklace. These blasts are powerful enough to blow away giant monsters at her command. Cullen Bloodstone was given a ring set with a piece from his father’s chest. The ring not only gives him enhanced strength, speed, an incredible healing factor, but it also subdues the parasitic monster known as a Glartrox that has bonded to his soul.
In the Marvel Presents special, Werewolf By Night, the Bloodstone is referred to as the Blood Gem. Instead of it being embedded in Ulysses’s chest, it was adorned and set as a necklace, though, it’s likely that it could’ve been there and then removed upon his death. It’s mainly used to reveal Jack Russell as a werewolf. It first shoots a concussive blast that knocks him prone when he tries to touch it, and then transforms him into a werewolf upon his capture. It also weakened Ted, aka Man-Thing, while he was trapped inside the maze.
It’s possible that the artifact could still imbue its user with enhanced abilities that haven’t been portrayed on screen. Now that the Bloodstone is in the rightful hands of Elsa, its possible fans could be seeing her in later stories involving Moon Knight or Blade. It could be used as a weapon against monsters and aliens alike, and with the upcoming Secret Invasion drawing near, there’s a chance it could be used to reveal Skrulls. The Bloodstone is a powerful artifact, and fans can anticipate seeing it again in the MCU.
