Renowned author George R.R. Martin claimed he was forgoing Elden Ring in order to focus on the sixth entry into his beloved A Song of Ice and Fire series, The Winds of Winter.

Martin revealed he was willingly abstaining from FromSoftware's critically acclaimed open-world Soulsborne title, with the writer claiming a playthrough would have likely preoccupied him for an extended period of time. "I have not played [Elden Ring] because people seem to want this Winds of Winter book," he explained. "And I have, unfortunately, a totally addictive personality. I did play video games a long, long time ago. I played games like Railroad Tycoon and Master of Orion and Homeworld and I would get sucked into it. Weeks and months would go by, and I'd be sitting there in my red flannel bathrobe just playing one more game, one more game. I can't. I got to go cold turkey on this, this is gonna kill me here."

The author additionally discussed his experience in developing the setting of Elden Ring alongside FromSoftware's team of developers. Martin continued, "It was fun and the Japanese team who put together the game — it's the most beautiful game I've ever seen and it's really amazing. Amazingly detailed, and the people who play [Elden Ring] love it, and I'm very gratified to have been a part of it."

Author Brandon Sanderson, best known for his Mistborn series, previously claimed that FromSoftware should have hired him to write Elden Ring's story in lieu of Martin. Sanderson jokingly suggested Martin didn't play video games and had "no idea" what to do with the franchise. He also believed his familiarity and love of the developer's previous titles would have made him the better choice over the A Song of Ice and Fire author, with Sanderson revealing he had been a devout follower of FromSoftware since the 1994 release of King's Field.

Elden Ring data miners alleged some of the files added in the game's patch 1.07 were related to its rumored DLC. The data miners discovered files that alluded to two never-before-seen zones, which may be packaged with Elden Ring's upcoming expansion. Notably, one of the files — named m20 — also shared characteristics with previous legacy dungeons, leading to fans speculating that Elden Ring's DLC will also add a new demigod boss.

Elden Ring is available for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PC.
