Does New Tales from the Borderlands Live Up to Its Predecessor?

Recently released New Tales from the Borderlands is the latest in the popular Borderlands franchise. Set as the sequel to Telltale Games' Tales from the Borderlands, New Tales faces high expectations from fans. Tales from the Borderlands is widely praised as potentially the best game Telltale ever produced. With such a reputation, New Tales from the Borderlands has quite the legacy to live up to.

New Tales follows in the original Tales' footsteps in a few ways. It's a narrative storyline driven by player choice. Every decision made impacts how the story progresses, providing a personalized experience. Players can choose a lighthearted path, a somber path, or somewhere in between. New Tales also contains much of the typical Borderlands chaos that made the franchise famous. The three charismatic protagonists of the game are scientist Anu, her hustling brother Octavio, and frogurt store owner Fran.

New Tales from the Borderlands' Protagonists Become Unlikable

Since its recent release, New Tales has received middling reviews. The three protagonists come off as contradictory the longer the story continues, and while their personalities make them lovable at the start, they quickly lose their charm. Anu suffers from anxiety, yet there are a few instances where none of it is present, making her appear to be far more comfortable than what would seem believable. Fran's excessive sexual passions, which many found humorous in the beginning, gradually became annoying for some as the game goes on. The extremes of the characters' traits push players out of immersion as the reality of the game falls into the realm of ridiculous. Some players chose not to even reach one ending, let alone the remaining four that New Tales offers.

Another criticism New Tales has is how the game's physics are a bit wonky. Enemy fire seems to completely miss the protagonists even when they're standing right in front of them, or in an easily accessible spot. Enemies have been known to be standing around while the protagonists attack them as well.

New Tales from the Borderlands' Humor Grows Stale Over Time

New Tales also has an issue with overuse of humor. Many players find the abundance of jokes to be very annoying and at odds with either the characters' personalities, the given situation, or both. The storyline itself comes off as lackluster and not cohesive, frequently leaving players lost. While the general consensus is that a lot of time was clearly spent on the writing, the end result leaves something to be desired. In fact, because so much time was spent on the writing, the story itself feels weighed down with too much content. The saturation of jokes disrupts the narrative so much that the plot is difficult to focus on. Characters are frequently introduced, only to have little relevance to the plot and disappear later on.

New Tales from the Borderlands Does Have Its Charms

On the other hand, New Tales did receive a relatively warm reception from other players. The soundtrack has been a positive hit — true to the music for which the franchise is known. The game is also structured in a way that some players were able to warm up to the characters as they progressed through the story. The humor seems to be hit-or-miss with players, as there are plenty of complaints about it, while others find it enjoyable. Despite this, it seems that even players who are entertained by the humor can understand how it would be off-putting to others.

Of all the reviews New Tales from the Borderlands has received so far, quite a few are negative. Players are bombarded with so much content that they feel overwhelmed. The amount of content leaves the story itself lagging and a bit of a let-down, even with the redeeming points found in the game. Excessive humor, wonky physics, and too much content make it hard for players to connect to the world and its characters. Unfortunately, New Tales seems to have failed to live up to its predecessor.
