Chainsaw Man’s Denji Has a Creepy Throwback to Naruto’s Jiraiya

The following contains spoilers for Episode 2 of Chainsaw Man, "Arrival in Tokyo" now streaming on Crunchyroll.

One of the most intriguing aspects of Chainsaw Man's Denji is how immature he is. He comes off as a kid at heart, which is sympathetic as he grew up poor, and he's lost so many loved ones in his tragic past. This all makes it easy to root for him as he joins Makima's Public Safety Unit, hoping to kill demons and make some money.

Pochita, the dog that bonded with him had no problem transferring its power too, all because it wanted to see Denji happy and living a life he always dreamed of. However, as much as fans are hoping Denji turns out to be a hero and gets paid along the way, he does have one disgusting quality that nods to a fan-favorite Naruto character: Jiraiya.

Naruto's Jiraiya Was a Pervert

In the Naruto series, Jiraiya was quite problematic. He was a pervert who frequented spas and such, interested in peeking at women through holes. It was totally twisted, because such an invasion of privacy is indeed a criminal act. To make it worse, Jiraiya didn't even hide his attitude from a young Naruto, who realized Jiraiya couldn't control himself.

In addition, he was obsessed with Tsunade's bust. This detracted from him being a badass mentor and defender of Konoha, because as likable and honorable as he was as Naruto's godfather, he simply came off like a creep who didn't respect women. It's why Jiraiya became known as the "Ero-Sennin" or "Pervy Sage," a badge he wore proudly in a most disturbing manner.

Chainsaw Man's Denji Has a Creepy Air As Well

Denji cuts the same figure in Chainsaw Man, as seen when he and Hayakawa go after a devil in a loft. Denji quickly lops the being's head off with an ax, but it's not in the name of efficiency. He just wants the death to be as quick and clean as possible so they don't dirty the possessed guy's porno mags, homaging Jiraiya's love for smutty magazines and kinky novels. That's right, Denji's a collector and wants them unstained — and while he shouldn't be fetish-shamed, it does leave Hayakawa wondering what kind of man-child he's working with.

The more disconcerting aspect of Denji's character, however, is how he keeps harping that he'd love to fondle Makima's chest, in a direct homage to Jiraiya. He even 'trips' and falls headfirst into her bosom in one scene; an act Jiraiya's also noted for in the Naruto lore. It repulses Hayakawa, although Makima does seem to be cool, knowing she can keep manipulating Denji with his lust.

Ultimately, this isn't funny at all, and in an era where anime and manga should be less about objectifying women, Denji's behavior, like Jiraiya's, is a step back from progression. It could harm the mediums by falling into nasty stigmas and tropes that alienate and weird people out, coming off misogynistic at times and, sadly, promoting rape culture. Hopefully this diminishes moving forward — or at least tempered tastefully — because even though Chainsaw Man is an adult property, it doesn't make Denji as virtuous as the franchise would like him to be.
