One Piece Film: Red is 2022's Highest-Grossing Film in Japan

One Piece Film: Red, directed by Goro Taniguchi, is the franchise's 15th feature-length movie. It hit theaters in Japan on Aug. 6 and went on to become a huge hit, selling over 12.5 million tickets and grossing over 17 billion yen (approximately $116 million at the time of writing.) The movie is currently Japan's highest-grossing film of 2022. As of Oct. 24, it is also the ninth-highest-grossing film in Japanese history and the country's sixth-highest-grossing anime film.

The story of One Piece Film: Red begins when Luffy and the other Straw Hat pirates travel to the island of Elegia to see Uta, a world-famous diva, perform live in concert. However, in a surprising reveal, it turns out Uta is not only a childhood friend of Luffy's but also the daughter of the famous pirate chief, Red-Haired Shanks, who abandoned her as a child. Setting her pain aside, she aims to use her musical talent to bring the world into a new age of peace and happiness for all.

One Piece Film: Red makes its North American debut on Nov. 4, a day after the film releases in New Zealand and Australia on Nov. 3. To promote the film ahead of its Western release, Crunchyroll recently released a clip of the film's English dub, which stars AmaLee as Uta, while the Japanese singer, Ado, continues to perform Uta's songs in the film. Colleen Clinkenbeard Carroll, who voices Monkey D. Luffy in FUNimation's English dub of the series, also voices Luffy in Red. Brandon Potter is also reprising his role as Red-Haired Shanks from the FUNimation dub.

Those who want to catch up on One Piece before One Piece Film: Red hits Western theaters can watch the series on Crunchyroll.
