Silent Hill 2’s Best Ending Is Also Its Silliest Meme

Easters eggs are one of gaming's most entertaining aspects. Hidden by the game developers, these messages serve as a way to indirectly communicate with the player, reference media the team was inspired by, or serve as a well-earned trophy for clearing a difficult task. While there are countless examples, one of the most popular and funny Easter eggs comes from the not-so-humorous horror title, Silent Hill 2.

Developed and published by video game company Konami in 2001, Silent Hill 2 set the standard for survival horror games with a chilling atmosphere and an intriguing story. As a result, the game was a critical success, selling over a million copies within its first month. While Silent Hill 2 became an inspiration for creating a great video game, it also taught players and developers alike how to make memorable secret endings, like the game's famous dog ending. With a Silent Hill 2 remake on the way, fans are wondering if they'll get to see this popular ending once again.

Silent Hill 2's Secret Dog Ending Is a Comical Take on a Terrifying Game

With six endings in total, the main four endings detail the potential happenings between James, Mary, and Maria. Meanwhile, the other two joke endings are far more entertaining, providing a wholesome and funny conclusion that contradicts Silent Hill 2's bone-chilling atmosphere. Specifically, the dog ending unveils that a Shiba Inu dog called Mira has been secretly controlling the entire plot and guiding James. After bonding with the dog, the credits roll with a funny montage of cutscenes, a picture of Mira, and witty barking music playing along.

How to Unlock The Secret Dog Ending in Silent Hill 2

To meet the lovely Mira and stop its villainous shenanigans, players need to experience all three main endings: Leave, In Water, and Maria. Afterward, in a New Game Plus save file, gamers need to find the dog key located in the doghouse in the open lot across from the exit pathway of Rosewater Park in West South Vale. Once the videotape from room 312 is viewed, players need to open the observation room. In it, they will find Mira and James will exclaim, "So, it was all your work!" Then the special credits will roll.

Why Silent Hill 2's Dog Ending Should Be Included in the Remake

It is also worth noting that while Silent Hill 2's dog ending is possibly the most popular joke ending in gaming, Konami has included secret endings in all three of the first titles in the Silent Hill series. Back then, these Easter eggs and secret endings were rarely heard of, which only served to popularize the series, and in turn Konami. If the company was to include this secret ending in the remake, then it will show that Konami respects its roots and will pay homage to its beginnings and original fan base.

Although there is no official confirmation from Konami regarding the secret ending, it is fair to assume that it may just make the final cut. As Konami has recently announced a piggy bank statue that portrays the dog ending, as well as a Mira plushie and enamel pin. However, these merch items are only available for pre-order and won't be released to the public until late 2023.
