CBR VIDEO OF THE DAY

10/10 The Bone Collector Followed A Disabled Detective Solving A Case

One of Denzel Washington's best performances is as the quadriplegic detective Lincoln Rhyme in The Bone Collector. The film saw the protagonist and his partner teaming up to stop a serial killer, while Rhyme operates remotely, unable to assist his partner directly. The Bone Collector had a terrifying serial killer who used his unassuming job as a taxi driver to trap people.

With Rhyme confined to his bed, he guided the younger detective Amelia Donaghy in the case as she investigated the scene. As the film drew to a close, it became clear that whoever the killer was, they were far closer to the heroes than expected.

9/10 Mindhunters Followed FBI Profilers Trapped On An Island

Boasting an incredibly impressive cast when it was released, Mindhunters saw a team of FBI profilers sent to a training island to perfect their skills. However, when members of the group start dying in horrific ways, the team comes together to figure out which of them is responsible.

The methodical nature of the killer in this film mirrored the intelligent planning of John Doe from Se7en. However, rather than being a slasher-type story, it saw a series of elaborate traps prepared around the island, each specifically designed to play on the characters' flaws.

8/10 Fallen Paired The Detective Genre With A Biblical Mystery

Starring Denzel Washington, Fallen puts a biblical twist on the murder mystery thriller genre. Beginning with lead detective John Hobbes witnessing the execution of a murderer, the detective feels that justice has been served. But the story soon takes a turn.

When strange occurrences related to the murderer begin to present themselves, Hobbes starts to realize that a greater power is at play. It is soon revealed that none other than a fallen angel Azazel has the ability to possess people and wreak havoc in the form of bloody murder.

7/10 Copycat Followed A Psychologist As She Battled A Dangerous Stalker

Sigourney Weaver stars as FBI profiler Helen Hudson in Copycat. The film begins with its lead being attacked after a speech. Following the close call, she becomes a recluse, confined to her home by a debilitating case of agoraphobia and unable to leave her home.

But when a serial killer case requires her help, the reluctant Helen joins in the investigation. Copycat was a great thriller that kept the viewer guessing which character would prove to be the killer – and what relation the case would have to Helen's earlier attacker.

6/10 Zodiac Was A Great Depiction Of The Real Case

In Zodiac, a great ensemble cast came together to tell the story of the real-life serial killer who terrorized San Francisco in the 1960s. Following the reports of journalists, police, and victims alike, Zodiac was incredibly similar to Se7en, and the real-life events no doubt inspired the latter.

While taking some liberties with the facts, Zodiac did a good job of depicting the infamous events that would later inspire Dirty Harry. Jake Gyllenhaal's performance as Robert Graysmith, coupled with the anonymity of the real-world killer, immersed viewers in the harrowing case that remains unsolved today.

5/10 Prisoners Saw A Father Doing Whatever It Takes To Save His Children

The key thing that unites Prisoners with a movie like Se7en is the masterful slow building of suspense, culminating in an unexpected twist. Beginning with the abduction of children from two families, the parents resort to extreme measures to find out what happened to their kids.

Following the dual stories of the parents and the lead detective on the case, the movie explores the harsh methods used by the characters. Leaving off on a cliffhanger, Prisoners did an excellent job of putting the viewer in the place of the parents and understanding their actions.

4/10 Red Dragon Is The Best Story In The Hannibal Lecter Series

While Silence of the Lambs is responsible for turning Hannibal Lecter into a household name, the character and his world saw their best story in Red Dragon. Focusing on Will Graham rather than Clarice Starling, it told the story of a brutal serial killer who targeted families.

The exploration of the relationship between Graham and Lecter played out brilliantly on-screen as the story cut to the life of its antagonist – Ralph Fiennes' Francis Dolarhyde. The case culminated in Graham and his family becoming the killer's target.

3/10 8MM Featured A Private Detective Solving A Horrific Mystery

Starring iconic actor Nicolas Cage, 8MM follows a young private detective hired by a wealthy widow to investigate a videotape owned by her husband that shows a murder. Terrified of the implications to her family legacy if real, the woman sends Tom Welles (Cage) across the country to solve the case.

As the story progresses, the case leads Welles deeper into the Los Angeles criminal underground, eventually leading to the revelation that the tape is real. After realizing this, Welles sets out to find the men responsible and bring them to justice.

2/10 Kiss The Girls Remains The Best Alex Cross Story

Starring Morgan Freeman as Alex Cross, Kiss the Girls featured a case involving a string of missing women and the serial killer behind them. When one of the women managed to escape, expert investigator Alex Cross joined the case and the hunt for the killer.

As the authorities searched for the killer, their investigation led them into the deep woods, playing on the isolation of the area. The movie channeled the same fantastic slow-burn thriller investigation as Se7en, even featuring Morgan Freeman as the film's leading detective.

1/10 A Walk Among The Tombstones Is One Of The Best Thrillers In Recent Memory

Starring Liam Neeson as a recovering alcoholic police officer turned private detective, A Walk Among the Tombstones is one of the best detective movies in recent history. Released in 2014, it followed Matt Scudder (Neeson) as a PI solving a brutal murder.

The film matched Se7en in building tension and a great depiction of detective work. The dysfunctional hero on a case of redemption made for a great story, and the constant twists and turns enhanced the mystery. A Walk Among The Tombstones is by far one of the best thrillers out there.
