Is It Too Late for Silent Hill To Make a Comeback?

To a mix of shock and awe for fans, it was recently announced that not one but four new Silent Hill games and a movie are in the works. These titles include a Silent Hill 2 remake, Silent Hill F, Silent Hill Ascension, and Silent Hill Townfall. While there are currently no release windows for any of them, the trailers no doubt have many excited to return to the universe in all its gloriously foggy, supernatural horror.

However, it might be wise for fans to temper their expectations of these titles due to a major problem plaguing the series: It's being published by Konami. Konami is a Japan-based corporation that, for decades, has developed and published video games. Its most iconic franchises include Metal Gear, Castlevania, Contra, Frogger, Yu-Gi-Oh! and (of course) Silent Hill. However, in recent years, the company's handling of these IPs has left fans dissatisfied, and with good reason. As a publisher, even if it had minimal input in developing a game, Konami can and has canceled titles, regardless of the progress made.

Konami's Handling of Hideo Kojima's Silent Hills Tarnished Its Reputation

The last project for the franchise that was in the works was Silent Hills, a game developed by Hideo Kojima and starring Norman Reedus. This title was highly anticipated after the release of a demo known as P.T. Unfortunately, despite the demo's high praise, the full game was canceled in 2015 by Konami due to disagreements between senior Konami members and Kojima. This escalated to the point where Konami removed all mention of Kojima from its products and Kojima Productions was closed before being reformed as an independent studio.

During The Game Awards 2015, Metal Gear Solid V won multiple awards, but Kojima was not present to accept them. This is because he was reportedly barred from attending by Konami. This action, seemingly done to spite Kojima and his studio regardless of their work on the game, left fans outraged at Konami, further darkening the company's reputation.

After canceling Silent Hills, Konami's CEO, Hideki Hayakawa, announced that the majority of the company's new titles would focus on mobile gaming, moving away from console platforms, save for a few exceptions. It's unknown if the announced titles will constitute the only console/PC games that Konami makes moving forward.

This is far from the only franchise to suffer under Konami's poor decisions. After Kojima's departure, the Metal Gear series had its reputation tarnished with both the controversy surrounding Metal Gear Solid V's development and the release of Metal Gear Survive, an online survival game with tower defense elements against hordes of zombie enemies. The game was very poorly received and regarded as a quick cash grab, similar to Bethesda's Fallout 76.

It Might Be Too Late for Silent Hill (and Konami) to Make a Comeback

While it's possible for gaming companies to seek and earn redemption from fans, many would argue that in Konami's case, it's too far gone to be redeemed. The controversy surrounding Kojima and his production studio should not be forgotten, especially by any developers currently working under Konami. Allegations by employees of their treatment before and after leaving the company shouldn't be forgotten, either. Some would even go so far as to say that Konami is no better than Electronic Arts and its business practices.

Perhaps the most reassuring news of these announcements is that Konami has tasked third-party companies to develop the games, and most of them already have experience. However, Silent Hill has fallen behind various competing franchises. In its absence, series such as Resident Evil have already filled the void for fans of survival horror, with acclaimed sequels and remakes of their own having been released or announced in recent years. Whether these developers can create titles to match the creativity of Kojima remains to be seen.
