Meta Quest v50 Update Adds Several Quality of Life Improvements

The Meta Quest 2 and Meta Quest Pro are receiving an update that should make the devices easier and more intuitive to use. While some of the improvements are still only available in the experimental testing mode, the update should give both the Meta Quest 2 and Quest Pro a boost.

The Meta Quest 2 is still receiving updates, although Facebook has revealed that the original Oculus Quest's updates are coming to an end. While some fans are eagerly awaiting the reveal of the Meta Quest 3, those who already own the current iteration of the device are probably pleased to know that the company is still supporting it with improvements.

Meta Quest's v50 system update has launched, and it's bringing several improvements, both with the devices' peripherals and the basic interface. To start, the Touch Pro controllers have been given a boost, as Meta states that they'll take less time to start up and activate tracking after the user puts on the headset. Previously, there was a bit of a wait while the controllers and headset synchronized with each other. While the Touch Pro controllers launched with the Meta Quest Pro, they're also compatible with the Meta Quest 2, but Meta made no mention of the improvement carrying over to the Quest 2.

Next, the Meta Quest 2's touch controls have been given a boost. While users could previously utilize touch controls on the device's basic interface, they were less than intuitive and sometimes difficult to use. Activating anything required using specific hand movements, like pinching the index finger and thumb together. With this update, the touch controls are now designed to be more intuitive and similar to using a physical digital device. Users can tap on the "screen" in front of them and scroll with a finger.

Finally, the Meta Quest 2 has gotten a significant improvement in mutitasking. Users no longer have to close their VR application in order to browse the web or to use 2D applications. This feature was previously made available on the Quest Pro. However, the new function isn't perfect; users will still have to shut the overlaid window in order to use their VR program again. Additionally, early reports indicate that there's a significant amount of lag when toggling a second app.

With these features in development, chances are that the Meta Quest 3 will launch with them. While the exact details of the Meta Quest 3 aren't yet known, the device is likely to be more powerful than the Quest 2, so some of the performance struggles may not be an issue with it. In the meantime, though, these functions should improve the experience for owners of the current VR headsets.
