Splatoon 3 Reveals Detailed Look at New Map Coming With Upcoming Season

Splatoon 3 is getting a new map with the Fresh Season update, and now the devs have shared a closer look at what it will bring. Fans are excited for a new Splatoon 3 map to play, but there are some concerns regarding how it looks, as well.

Splatoon 3 launched with several stages, both new and from prior games, and has continued to add more with seasonal releases. Splatoon 3's Fresh Season kicks off at the start of March, and will bring back the Manta Maria from Splatoon 2. However, the other map, Um'ami Ruins, is brand new to the title.

Over on the official Splatoon Twitter account, the developers gave fans a short look at Um'ami Ruins. The map is designed to look like an archeological site, complete with dig equipment, cranes, and a facade with what looks like a squid on either side of the entrance. The description suggests that it may have been a battle site from an "ancient" turf war. Like all other maps, this one will be playable in standard Turf War modes, as well as Anarchy Battles.

A new map for the game is always welcome, as it should help to keep the experience feeling fresh as the existing rotation becomes stale. However, fans have concerns and complaints regarding the map already. One of the biggest is that there doesn't seem to be a valid way of flanking the other side, which is a boon for players who use inkbrushes and other sneaky weapons. Players have already pointed out that the majority of the maps in Splatoon 3 are lacking ways to flank, so this map will only be further adding to the frustration.

Um'ami Ruins doesn't have much in the way of verticality. Many maps in Splatoon 3 have been primarily flat, with low-lying platforms at most. Some players have brought this up as a point of contention, which may leave some disappointed by this map. However, one of the best examples of a map with verticality in Splatoon 2 was Moray Towers, which has been frequently argued to be one of the worst maps of that title.

While Um'ami Ruins may not please every player, some are likely to enjoy it a great deal. Additionally, several maps in Splatoon 2 were altered over the course of the game to address complaints and unfair advantages, so it's not out of the question that Um'ami Ruins – or even other maps – may have flank routes added in the future. It remains to be seen if the developers are listening to players' map concerns, but fans will have to wait until the summer season to see if a more vertical map joins the rotation.

Splatoon 3 is available now for Nintendo Switch.
