The Legend Of Zelda: 6 Villains Who Weren’t Always Evil

Having been around for nearly four decades, The Legend of Zelda has its fair share of characters fighting to protect the land of Hyrule. From Link and Princess Zelda to their allies along the way, Hyrule isn’t short of heroes willing to save the kingdom from the malice of Ganondorf and other demons seeking to wreak havoc.

There will be many more villains to contend with in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. While their motives are yet to be known, they’ll be working together with an evil entity hellbent on taking Hyrule once and for all. Most villains in The Legend of Zeldafranchise are somewhat related to demons like Ganon or Demise, whether they’ve been taken over by their malice or used as puppets. But not all the villains in The Legend of Zelda have always been evil. Some were good, turned good, or had a little purity before turning evil.

6 Byrne (Spirit Tracks)

First introduced in The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks, Byrne uses dark magic to harness the power of Demon King Malladus. Byrne was once an apprentice of Anjean, a protector of the Tower of Spirits. Leaving her to find the power he sought, Byrne starts working with the evil Chancellor Cole to resurrect Malladus. After losing to Link and Zelda during a boss fight and then nearly being killed by Malladus, Byrne decides to help the duo and reveals that the only way to kill the demon is by using the Compass of Light, which can be found nestled under the altar in Tower of Spirits.

When Malladus takes over Zelda’s body, Byrne rescues her but is killed as a result. At the end of the game, Anjean reassures Link and Zelda that Byrne’s spirit will one day return with no recollection of what happened and that he will start his life anew.

5 Cia (Hyrule Warriors)

A major antagonist of Hyrule Warriors, Cia was once a force for good. The sorceress was initially a guardian of the Triforce, tasked with maintaining its balance and protecting it from evil. But due to her insatiable infatuation with Link, she becomes jealous of Zelda. In Hyrule Warriors, this weakness is preyed upon by the spirit of Ganondorf, who persuades her to join him and get what she wants. The Demon King removes the light from Cia, which becomes its own being, Lana, and corrupts her to the point that she opens the Gate of Souls to take over Hyrule.

Using Cia as a puppet, Ganondorf restores the Triforce to resurrect himself. Unsurprisingly, Link defeats Cia in battle. Lana rushes to her side as she lies dying, and Cia gives the Triforce of Power to her. In Hyrule Warriors Legends, Phantom Ganon has once again used Cia to steal her power. As a result, Dark Cia emerges, which is destroyed by Lana with the aid of Link, Tetra, and the King of Hyrule. Cia then subdues the dark magic of Phantom Ganon, allowing the group to defeat him once and for all. Once destroyed, Lana, Cia, and Link return to Hyrule, where Cia is reinstated as the guardian of the Triforce.

4 Vaati (Four Swords, Four Swords Adventures & The Minish Cap)

Aside from Ganon, Vaati has remained a fan favorite villain among fans. Introduced in The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords on the GameBoy Advance, the evil sorcerer has a penchant for kidnapping maidens, a fascination with what evil can do to the hearts of men, and harnessing mighty power. In The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap, Vaati’s history is explored further, revealing that he was once the apprentice of Ezlo, a Minish sage who Vaati curses into the form of a cap.

Vaati was once a Minish like Ezlo, but his desire for power ultimately corrupted him. While Vaati was never necessarily good, the villain came from a peaceful race admired by Hyrulians, having given them the Picori Blade – a sword of great power.

3 Master Kohga (Breath Of The Wild)

Once a member of the Sheikah tribe, Master Kohga founded the Yiga clan after the Sheikah were exiled by the King of Hyrule and its people following the Great Calamity. Having built the Guardians with their advanced technology, which was subsequently taken over by Calamity Ganon, the Hyrulians were apprehensive of what their power may hold.

As a result, members of the Sheikah tribe splintered across Hyrule – including Kohga, who founded the Yiga clan a century before the events of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Siding with Ganon, they vow to destroy all that will stand in the Demon King’s path – including Link. As Kohga was once a member of the Sheikah clan, it is believed he once had some good in him. But due to his vengeance against those who exiled his tribe, he has nothing but revenge on his mind in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

2 Sooga (Hyrule Warriors: Age Of Calamity)

Serving as Master Kohga’s bodyguard, Sooga has an extraordinary loyalty to the founder of the Yiga clan. As seen in a flashback during Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, Kohga saved Sooga from starvation when surrounded by clan members. Likewise, in Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, Sooga sacrifices himself to save Kohga from the Blight Ganons.

While not a protagonist, Sooga showcases his willingness to put his life on the line for the man that took him in. Giving Kohga enough time to escape, Sooga is killed by the Blight Ganons. While it seems that Sooga has perished, he appears once more in Hyrule Warriors: Guardians of Remembranceas a playable ally.

1 Princess Hilda (A Link Between Worlds)

Princess Hilda is the secondary antagonist of The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, conspiring with the evil sorcerer Yuga to steal Hyrule’s Triforce to restore and save the people of Lorule. Her kingdom once had its own Triforce, but due to the constant fighting over its power, the Lorulian Royal Family decided to destroy their Triforce. This starts the destruction of Lorule, which Hilda intends to stop by stealing Hyrule’s Triforce.

Despite Yuga eventually double-crossing Hilda to take the power of the Seven Sages for himself, Hilda still tries to steal Link and Zelda’s Triforce powers. However, she is eventually dismayed by Ravio, who once worked for the Princess, and returns Link, Zelda, and the Hyrulian Triforce back to Hyrule. In return, Link and Zelda use Hyrule’s Triforce to save and restore Lorule by reviving its own Triforce.

While Hilda is a villain in The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, her actions are to solely save her people. Unlike Yuga, she has nothing to gain from the power of Hyrule’s Triforce. Instead, she doesn’t want to see her kingdom destroyed, which Link and Zelda understand, thus using Hyrule’s Triforce to restore Lorule.
