Tales of Symphonia – Remastered is an updated port of the PS3 remastered version – which launched as part of the Chronicles collection. Players that upgraded from the original GameCube version will find that the initial controls have changed. However, the remastered Tales of Symphonia features the same button layout as the PS3 and PC versions when using a controller.

As seen with Tales of Symphonia's character-switching mechanics, the title's in-game instructions fail to explain how to use such features. This is also the case with Tales of Symphonia's Unison Attacks. There is a point where the game tries, but it's not explained well, so activating and using them in combat can be tricky.

When are Unison Attacks Unlocked?

When engaging in Tales of Symphonia's early battles, players will notice that the Unison attacks option is unavailable. The Unison Attack feature will not become available to the player until approximately 6 to 9 hours into Symphonia's story – potentially more if one takes their time to grind and level up.

Unison Attacks will become available after leaving Ossa's Trail. Ossa's Trail will become available after Colette has broken the first seal and gained her angel wings. When the party reaches the end of the path and defeats the ninja called Sheena, they should head for the field's overworld until a skit triggers between Lloyd and Kratos.

He will inform Lloyd about fighting as part of a team. This event will activate the Unison Attacks. A brief explanation appears with a tutorial on using these attacks, but it's too short and confusing without performing and seeing them in action.

How To Use Unison Attacks

As soon as the party has learned about Unison Attacks, a new gauge will appear above the characters' icons during fights. The Unison meter will fill up whenever the party members use combination attacks.

Press R3 on PlayStation or RS on the Xbox and Switch when the meter is ready to trigger Unsion Attacks. The party has a few seconds to attack the enemy in unison by activating their Tech attacks.

However, because of the small time frame players have to activate these attacks, they should set their favorite Techs to the face buttons and not worry about the directional-based attacks until they get used to the speed and reaction times needed in the early stages of Tales of Symphonia.

Setting Unison Attacks

Each character is assigned their own Unison Attack button. The leading character will always be set at X on the PlayStation, A on the Xbox, or B on the Switch. The remaining party button assignments will depend on their position in combat. Activating these attacks is similar to pulling off a Tech attack.

After the lead character has hit their Tech attack, the next character is up, and the player needs to trigger the next Tech by pressing their assigned face button. The sequence will continue until all characters have used their Tech attacks or the time has expired. To set up Unison attacks in the menu, follow these steps:

  • Press the Triangle button on the PlayStation, X Button on the Switch, or the Y button on the Xbox.
  • Select U.Attack
  • Now players can set their favorite Tech attacks to the face and d-pad buttons.

Keeping things simple, players should assign their favorite Techs to the first option without directional buttons. This will make stringing attacks easier until the player is used to the required timing for more advanced attacks pressed with the D-Pad and face button combined.

Tales of Symphonia – Remastered is available now for the PS4, Switch, and Xbox One. Previous versions are available on the GameCube, PC, and PS3.
