Hogwarts Legacy: How To Complete Sacking Selwyn (Side Quest Guide)

Hogwarts Legacy places its players in the shoes of a young fifth-year student during their time at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Upon arriving at the famed wizarding school, they will be forced to partake in a number of magical classes, but they will eventually be given the freedom to explore the world outside.

Players can encounter a variety of unique side quests while exploring the vast world of Hogwarts Legacy, but not all of them are available from the start of the game. Some, like the Sacking Selwyn side quest, can only be started after reaching a certain point in the story.

How To Begin The Sacking Selwyn Side Quest In Hogwarts Legacy

In order to begin the Sacking Selwyn side quest, the player must first have unlocked and completed the Helm of Urknot main quest and must then reach level 35. Upon doing so, they can fast-travel to the Cragcroft Floo Flame and meet Hyacinth Oliver on the hill overlooking the hamlet.

Hyacinth will explain to the protagonist that a group of Ashwinders, led by Silvanus Selwyn, have been terrorizing Cragcroft. She will then reveal that she is offering a bounty to anyone who can infiltrate their hideout at Clagmar Castle and dispose of Selwyn.

Where To Find Clagmar Castle

From Cragcroft, the player should mount their broom and head southwest until they happen upon the ruins of a castle atop a hill. This location is known as Clagmar Castle, but those who have already visited the Floo Flame here can fast-travel there instead if they are hoping to complete the Sacking Selwyn side quest quickly.

Upon arriving, the player will need to explore the purple circle on their minimap until they locate Selwyn, one of the twenty-one Infamous Foes scattered throughout the world of Hogwarts Legacy. Like most Infamous Foes, Selwyn has backup, so players should prepare themselves for a pretty tough battle before confronting him.

How To Defeat Silvanus Selwyn

Players won't need to look too hard to find Silvanus Selwyn upon arriving at Clagmar Castle, as he and his lackeys will launch an attack the moment they spot the protagonist. That said, the Disillusionment charm can help the player infiltrate the ruins stealthily if they wish to take Selwyn out without any interference.

To do this, they should enter the ruins from the south while invisible and sneak up on Selwyn from the left-hand side of the tent he is standing in front of. Casting Petrificus Totalus on him from behind will deplete a significant portion of his health, but sadly, it will not incapacitate him.

Casting Petrificus Totalus on Selwyn will also reveal the player's location to all the enemies in Clagmar Castle, but leaving the area will cause them to return to their previous positions. It is possible to defeat Selwyn by repeatedly leaving the location and sneaking back to cast Petrificus Totalus on him, but some players may prefer to fight him directly.

If so, the best way to begin the battle is to dispose of the other Ashwinders in the area. Once they have all been dealt with, the player can then focus all their attention on Selwyn.

Selwyn's attacks are pretty easy to predict; he only has two. One sees him casting Expulso at the protagonist, while the other sees him summoning lightning down from the sky onto wherever the protagonist is standing.

Expulso can be blocked with a well-timed Protego, while Selwyn's lightning attack can only be dodged. A great way to weaken Selwyn is to cast Stupefy after blocking his Depulso spell, which will leave him vulnerable for a few moments.

How To Complete The Sacking Selwyn Side Quest

Once Selwyn and his goons have been defeated, the player should head back to Cragcroft and speak to Hyacinth Oliver, who can be found atop the same hilltop on which she informed the protagonist about Selwyn.

Upon interacting with her, the player will be given the option to ask for a bigger reward. Choosing this option will result in Hyacinth insulting the student and rewarding them with 500 Galleons while choosing the "Happy to help" option will reward them with 300 Galleons.

Neither choices affect the overall story, so players can feel free to choose whatever they like. When the cutscene ends, the player will receive the Ashwinder Skull Gloves and whatever amount of Galleons they opted to obtain.

Hogwarts Legacy is available now on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. PS4 and Xbox One versions will release on April 4 and a Switch version will release on July 25.
