Star Trek: This Was How LeVar Burton Reacted To The Picard Season 3 Pitch

Star Trek: Picard season 3 is in full swing right now, and it's got plenty of returning stars from Star Trek's past to keep the fans happy. But they aren't the only ones getting emotional, as shown by a pretty heartwarming reaction by LeVar Burton.

The third season of Picard has seen Sir Patrick Stewart's titular former Starfleet admiral reuniting with his beloved fellow characters from Star Trek: The Next Generation. As a mysterious new enemy begins hunting down his former crew from the USS Enterprise, he finds himself among old friends for one more mission. Some may see this as an excuse to bring up some classic Star Trek nostalgia for the viewers. While that may be part of it, the viewers aren't the only ones getting something out of this.

Burton, reprising his Next Generation role of Commander Geordi La Forge (now promoted to Commodore on Picard), reportedly had a surprising reaction to being told about the story arc that would bring him back into the franchise. In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Picard season 3 showrunner Terry Matalas revealed what happened during that meeting. "I remember vividly the Zoom conversation I had with LeVar Burton, where I took him through the 10-episode arc I had envisioned for him," he said. "I pitched to him this big moment at the end of the season, and by the time I was done, there were tears in his eyes. It dawned on me that I just made Geordi La Forge cry with this story. And then I started to cry."

It's not difficult to see why Burton might have such a reaction. While Picard may have changed a few things since The Next Generation, that emotional core in all Star Trek projects appears fully intact. Even more comedic entries like Star Trek: Lower Decks contain their fair share of genuinely heartfelt moments, albeit strategically inserted between fart jokes and shockingly explicit crew interactions. But they're still there, and Picard's more serious tone offers several opportunities for such things.

The current season of Picard features a storyline meant to bring the former command crew from one of the many iterations of the USS Enterprise back together. This means that, aside from Burton, it features Stewart's former admiral reuniting with others, including Michael Dorn (Worf), Jonathan Frakes (William Riker), Gates McFadden (Dr. Beverly Crusher), Marina Sirtis (Counselor Deanna Troi), Brent Spiner (who was already a presence on the show as Data, Altan Inigo Soong, Adam Soong, and Lore). So one can imagine that Burton wasn't the only one who felt such a strong reaction.

Fans of Star Trek: The Next Generation are sure to find some warm and fuzzy feelings of their own seeing these iconic characters together once again. Considering Picard is already a tribute to the classic series, it seems like the natural next step for the new show. Here's hoping the season is everything it strives to be.
