How Destiny 2 Would Benefit From More Melee Weapon Types

Destiny 2 is a popular multiplayer online first-person shooter game developed by Bungie. Destiny 2 already offers a vast array of ranged weapons, including many primary, special, and heavy weapons as the game's main ammo types. However, in terms of melee weapons, the game has limited options. After the mixed introduction of the glaive hybrid weapon, and a year full of people rarely using it, it stands to reason that Destiny 2 would benefit from more melee weapon types.

GAMERANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Melee weapons are usually an essential component of any shooter game. Meanwhile, in Destiny 2, there are currently only a few melee weapons available, including swords, and to a lesser extent, glaives with their not-quite-intuitive mix of melee and ranged gameplay. More melee weapon types would certainly add more variety to the game, which is an important aspect of Destiny 2's RPG playstyle customization. Adding more melee weapons would also encourage players to experiment with different weapon loadout combinations in Destiny 2, allowing them to use a Heavy ammo gun in return for a melee weapon in one of the other two slots.

More Melee Archetypes in Destiny 2 Would Be Interesting

Also, more melee weapons could allow players to thrive in situations where close-quarters combat is hard to escape. Players in Destiny 2 often find themselves in moments where they are forced to engage in close-range combat with certain aggressive enemies like Overload Champions. In such scenarios, having a variety of melee weapons at their disposal to choose from before the encounter begins could allow for more melee builds, especially if said melee weapons could stun Champions with certain mods equipped.

Bungie has already done an excellent job introducing unique boss encounters and Exotic weapons to the game. However, adding more types of up-close melee weaponry could be what Bungie needs to finally tackle its anti-melee boss-stomp design standard. With enemy and boss encounters eventually being designed and refreshed for both range and melee equally, players would likely enjoy the added playstyle diversity. With how Bungie is refreshing Strike encounters in Lightfall, these changes wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility in future Destiny 2 expansions or sequels.

How Destiny 2's Sandbox Could Benefit From Daggers, Boomerangs, and More

Some new melee weapon ideas could include dual daggers that attack quickly with a multi-hit light attack combo, have an expanded lunge distance, and increase the player's movement speed as another Lightweight frame weapon archetype in Destiny 2. These daggers could also inherently give players an innate percent chance at evading ranged attacks, making them a more unique choice among Guardians who prefer a mobile playstyle.

Another interesting melee concept could be a bladed boomerang with a quick light attack combo that can also be thrown using the heavy attack at maximum gathered energy. Following the throw, the boomerang could hit several enemies and always fly back to the player. In Lightfall, the Strand Hunter subclass has a new mechanic with their new melee ability that gives melee energy back if they catch the dart upon its return. If they can catch it, they gain back more melee energy, which would be a neat mechanic for a boomerang-style returning melee weapon, which would instead gain ammo back.

Ultimately, cases could be made for Destiny 2 benefiting from more melee weapon types, especially after glaives failed to cement themselves in many players' loadouts. Bungie has done a great job of supporting the game with regular updates and new content that gives players new ways to play. Adding more melee weapons would be an easy additional step in that same correct developmental direction as Bungie continues to build out the Destiny universe and enhance new and old systems.

Destiny 2 is currently available for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
