Super Mario Bros. Movie: All Video Game Easter Eggs In The Trailers

The new and final trailer for The Super Mario Bros. Movie released by Nintendo during its special Direct presentation was perhaps the most exciting teaser yet for the film, and while Mario fans had already seen many of the scenes in it, this preview added more than a few easter eggs from the franchise's rich gaming history that some might have missed.

Not only that, given Mario's popularity all over the world, Nintendo opted to release several localized teasers that include footage not featured in the main three trailers that premiered in Direct showcases, some of which add extra references that allude to more surprises in the movie. With that said, here are some of the most notable easter eggs that have surfaced since Game Rant's breakdown of the Super Mario movie's second trailer.

Super Mario Bros. (NES Era)

At the start of the trailer, viewers can spot many Bowser minions with the big bad guy rallying his troops ahead of their assault on the Mushroom Kingdom. Bowser refers to the Koopas, Goombas and "whatever those things are" whose name he can't remember, however, these are the classic Spinies that first appeared in Super Mario Bros. in 1985. Shortly after, a few Sledge and Hammer Bros can also be seen gearing up for war.

It's easy to catch a glimpse of Mario's beloved Tanooki suit from Super Mario Bros. 3 in the second preview, but one of the international teasers happens to add footage of another classic Mario enemy, the Bloopers. Also introduced in the first NES title, these squid-like creatures could suggest the movie will feature a water level segment, the kind that players usually don't take kindly to.

Lastly, Nintendo and Illumination cleverly showed up on Super Bowl Sunday with a special commercial for Super Mario Bros. Plumbing, the brothers' small business based in New York City, at least judging from the map seen in it which shows them working in Brooklyn, Queens and the city's three other boroughs. While this is a call back to the failed 1993 Super Mario Bros. movie, the ad features Mario and Luigi in their vintage art style.

Donkey Kong

When Donkey Kong was revealed in a special TV spot, Seth Rogen's voice debuted in an arena that contains platforms similar to those found in the 1981 arcade game. Nevertheless, it appears that the rest of DK's worldbuilding is based on the characters recent titles like Donkey Kong Country Returns and Tropical Freeze. The most obvious nod to this came in another international preview that has Peach, Mario and Toad gliding towards a city resembling Donkey Kong's Golden Temple.

As if that wasn't enough, Cranky Kong's appearance is also modeled after the Aztec-inspired aesthetic that the Donkey Kong franchise loves so much. In that overseas teaser, Cranky can be seen driving next to Mario in a kart that's aptly decorated for the oldest Kong.

Super Mario 64

As one of gaming's most iconic images, Peach's Castle had to be present in the Super Mario Bros. Movie, but the level of detail and effort that's gone into recreating this location is impressive. Besides stained glass portrait of the Princess, the castle has been modernized to capture all of its Nintendo 64 charm, but with a model that's closer to its appearance in Odyssey.

That said, the sight of Bob-Omb Battlefield in the final trailer, as well as the Penguin King's recurring appearance are also signs that filmmakers had Super Mario 64 on their minds.

Super Mario Galaxy

Lumas and Super Mario Galaxy have been teased since the movie's McDonald's toys were first leaked, but few could have expected the starry begins to get this kind of makeover. The final trailer's Luma is a very dark take on the character, and their presence alone will have many wishing for a Rosalina cameo.

Super Mario 3D World And 3D Land

It's clear the Mario movie borrows a lot in its designs from Super Mario 3D World, as that is also the main influence for Nintendo's theme parks. Hence, why it's no shocker that clear pipes and power-ups like Cat Mario are heavily featured in Illumination's film.

And yet, the most mind-blowing contribution from 3D World is the idea of giving DK a proper fire power-up when he consumes one of these flowers.

Super Mario Odyssey

Like the previous games, Super Mario Odyssey's worlds were bound to be added onto the movie due to how easy it is to port them over to the movie's modern graphics, but the final trailer has already confirmed that its Sand Kingdom is one of the places visited during the Super Mario Bros. Movie's short runtime.

Also, other people's designs in the Plumbing ad seem inspired by Pauline and New Donk City residents, plus another international trailer showed a scene in which Mario and Luigi appear to be entering an underground area similar to the one beneath the Metro Kingdom.

Mario Kart

Given that it's the best-sellling Nintendo Switch game, seeing the movie adopt Mario Kart 8 Deluxe's garage style and customization options makes perfect sense. but the Rainbow Road race might just be the best thing in all the trailers.

Rainbow Road looks beautiful in the movie, and this cinematic Mario Kart will include mechanics taken from MK8, such as the zero gravity gliding, along with classic items that can be thrown backwards, just like in the games.

Other Games

In Spanish-speaking markets, audiences were treated to special ads featuring Luigi playing soccer with some Dry Bones minions, a reference to Mario Strikers, though it's unknown if the sport will be featured in the film.

Finally, the Toad that finds Mario and shows him around the Mushroom Kingdom is not any random citizen as his exploration gear is a clear nod to Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker. This probably suggests Toad was out looking for adventure when he ran into Mario, but it also underlines how much love and history is packed into the movie's trailers alone.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie will release on April 5, 2023.
