7 Cancelled Remasters We’ll Never Get To Play

Love them or loathe them, video game remasters are here to stay. Offering fans the chance to replay their favourite game on current consoles with increased resolution, higher framerates, and improved controls, it’s no surprise that the market has been flooded with remasters tapping into our nostalgia for the games of old.

However the market is not quite as saturated as it could have been. Despite remasters of popular IP usually being a safe and relatively cost-effective bet, a surprising number have ended up on the cutting room floor, forever destined to be dated with previous generation graphics. We’re talking some BIG games here, so read on for what could have been.

7 Xenosaga Will Remain A PS2 Saga

Wildly ambitious with hours of cutscenes, mountains of lore and some very interesting takes on religion and philosophy, Xenosaga has been dormant after ending prematurely with Episode 3 in 2006. Fans have been clamouring for a remaster, a wish that nearly became a reality as Bandai Namco game director Katsuhiro Harada revealed that a HD collection was considered, only to be cancelled after failing in profitable market analysis.

Thankfully spiritual successor Xenoblade Chronicles is alive and thriving, giving Xenosaga characters such as Kos-mos a second lease of life.

6 There'll Be No High-Definition Tomb Raiding

Lara Croft may have found one artefact that will forever remain a myth – a remaster of her own games. Firstly, in 2018 a Steam remaster was cancelled only a week after it was announced, after developers Realtech VR neglected the small issue of asking Square Enix for the rights.

Then, in 2022 a remaster of Tomb Raider: Anniversary — the 2007 remake of the original game — was reportedly in development by Virtuous Studios, only for that project to also be shelved for unkown reasons. Poor Lara can’t seem to catch a break. Here’s hoping the PS1 classic will be remastered soon, in all its blocky glory.

5 Shenmue 1 & 2 Get a HD Release – But No Remaster

Now here's an interesting one. Remasters of the highly influential Shenmue games were in the works with new models, textures and lighting, before being unceremoniously cancelled in 2017. Instead, what we got was a re-release of Shenmue 1 and 2. These were technically not full-on remasters, but high-definition ports with a few improvements, such as widescreen support and modern control options.

So yes, you can play Shenmue in HD on modern consoles — but we still wonder how much better those grainy textures could have looked with a full-on remaster.

4 Mortal Kombat Endures Two Fatalities

News of the Mortal Kombat games having a remaster cancelled surfaced in 2015, when series co-creator Ed Boon tweeted about a HD edition that was reportedly developed by Other Ocean Interactive with new actors and art.

As if that wasn't heartbreaking enough, in 2019 Blind Squirrel Games were rumoured to be working on remastered versions of the first three Mortal Kombat games. These were also cancelled, despite some promising leaked concept art. Maybe third time will be the charm for Mortal Kombat fans?

3 Goldeneye 007 Got Remaked, Not Remastered

Goldeneye 007 did eventually get a full blown remake on the Xbox 360 in 2010, but earlier in 2007 a remaster of the Nintendo 64 classic was on the cards for Xbox Live Arcade from developer Rare.

The game was only two months away from completion before being cancelled. This was due to the small issue of rights, which Rare had not actually secured. Given that production was so far along, there is plenty of footage available teasing what might have been — and this is one cancelled remaster you can (illegally) play, as portions have leaked online.

2 The Red Dead Remaster Is Dead

Even without a next-gen patch, Red Dead Redemption 2 is one of the best-looking games of all time — so it’s only natural that fans have long wished to see its predecessor at a similar visual standard. Rockstar seemingly agreed, and the long-rumoured remaster of the original Red Dead Redemption was apparently on the table. This was until reports it had been shelved in July 2022, due to a focus on the GTA franchise.

It’s been a rough time for Red Dead fans, who have been mourning the death of Red Dead Online while GTA 5 receives endless updates and remasters.

1 There’ll Be No 4K Bowling In GTA 4 Remastered

GTA is an absolute beast in the gaming industry, and with GTA 5 becoming the most profitable piece of pop culture ever, a remaster of previous entry GTA 4 seemed like a no-brainer.

However in July 2022 it was reported that a prospective remaster of Niko’s American Dream had been shelved, partly due to a desire to focus on the long-gestating GTA 6. Given the infamously poor reception of GTA: The Trilogy – Definitive Edition, this may well have proved to be a good thing — though poor Niko deserved better after long being overshadowed by GTA 5.
