Thor and Venom Just Merged to Create a New ‘God in Black’ Hybrid

The following contains spoilers for Thor #28, on sale now from Marvel Comics.

The God of Thunder and King in Black merge to become a new Venom/Thor hybrid character in Marvel's Thor #28.

Thor #28 comes from Al Ewing, Donny Cates, Salvador Larroca, Edgar Delgado and VC's Joe Sabino. The second and final part of the "Venom of Asgard" storyline, the issue sees Thor, Venom Sif and Loki battling a Darkoth the Death-Demon, a major foe who recently unveiled his own version of Mjolnir. Darkoth has also been possessed by the symbiote of Beldam's child, Bedlam being a future iteration of Eddie Brock introduced in the first issue of Ewing, Ram V and Bryan Hitch's ongoing Venom run. Quickly realizing his enemy is far more powerful than he may have initially realized, Thor turns to Venom with one possible way to achieve victory. "We no longer have the luxury of mercy — nor the luxury of pride," the God of Thunder says. "We cannot fight such darkness alone…so we must battle together. Are you of my mind, Edward Brock?" Venom promptly responds, "It'll be a new experience, if nothing else."

CBR VIDEO OF THE DAY

Venom proceeds to overtake Thor, thus creating a new "God in Black" character, which plays into both Thor's role as Marvel's God of Thunder and Venom's role as the King in Black. "Edward Brock's body died by fire," narration text reads. "There is nothing human in him. Nothing to keep him from folding around Thor…connecting on a primal level…becoming something…more."

The battle proceeds between the God in Black and Darkoth, with the latter of the two eventually being defeated through the use of Loki's magic. Once Bedlam's child is cast out of Darkoth, Venom and Thor separate from one another; however, Venom then reveals this incarnation of Eddie Brock is actually Meridius, another version of the character who comes from the future. The two briefly fight one another before Meridius is overpowered, causing him to vanish.

What Comes Next For the God of Thunder?

With Venom's time in Asgard now at an end, upcoming issues of Thor will begin a new storyline titled "The Legacy of Thanos," which sees the God of Thunder venture down deep into the depths of the afterlife. The synopsis for Thor #29 reads, "The Legacy of Thanos – part one! Nic Klein returns with guest writer Torunn Grønbekk (Jane Foster & The Mighty Thor, Punisher: War Journal) for a Valkyrie-filled adventure! When a universally loathed foe kidnaps Thor's baby sister Laussa and drags her so deep beyond Hel that not even Sif's All-Sight can see her, the God of Thunder must call upon the one ally who has traveled so far into the unknown before: Rúna. But what dark secrets of Asgard's bloody past lay beneath the frozen waters?"

Thor #28 features cover art by Nic Klein and variant cover art by Gregg Smallwood. The issue is on sale now from Marvel.
